How we make money

DecideHome is free to read and does not sell subscriptions or run display ads. We are paid by some of the companies we compare when a reader clicks through to their site and signs up. This page explains that arrangement plainly, because the Federal Trade Commission requires it and because you should know.

Affiliate commissions

Buttons and links marked Partner are affiliate links, mostly through the CJ Affiliate network. If you click one and then order service, the provider pays us a referral fee. The price you pay is the same as going to the provider directly; in many cases the link lands you on the same promotional page. Links to providers marked Editorial listing pay us nothing.

What commissions do not change

  • Rankings and scores. Scores are computed from the published criteria on our methodology page. Commission status is not an input. A provider that pays nothing can and does outrank providers that pay.
  • Which providers appear. We include the providers that serve a meaningful share of US homes whether or not they have an affiliate program.
  • Reviews. Reviews are written from the same dated fact sheets as the rankings, including the negatives.

What commissions can affect

Two things, both disclosed: which categories we choose to cover first (we prioritize categories where we can sustain the research), and the existence of a clearly labeled "Partner" button next to a provider. We do not sell placements, "featured" slots, or sponsored rankings.

Paid advertising

We sometimes buy search ads to reach people comparing providers. We never bid on providers' trademarks, and the pages those ads lead to are the same pages everyone else sees.
