PODS Review (2026): Container Sizes, Real Costs, Storage Rules and the Fine Print

Verdict: PODS is the most flexible container service we track: three sizes, month-to-month rental, 240+ storage centers and published protection prices. The reasons to hesitate are a price built from several separate charges, a $150 late-cancellation fee and 1,802 BBB complaints in three years.

Updated October 30, 2026 · Facts verified October 30, 2026
What we like
  • Good fit: Moves with a gap between homes that need storage at one or both ends
  • Good fit: Local and long-distance moves where you want the container to sit while you pack
Watch out for
  • Not for: Anyone who wants a firm price online without a sales call
  • Not for: Moves to Alaska, Montana, North Dakota or Wyoming, which PODS does not serve

The short version

PODS invented the driveway container in 1998 and still runs the largest network: three container sizes, service in 44 states plus Washington, D.C. by moveBuddha’s count, and more than 240 storage centers (moveBuddha). You rent a container by the month, load it on your own schedule, and PODS either drives it to your new home or parks it in a warehouse until you are ready. The first month of container use is included in every quote.

The trade-off is price clarity. A PODS quote stacks a monthly rental, a delivery charge, a pickup charge and, for long-distance moves, a transportation charge, and NerdWallet found “you can’t get a reliable quote online without supplying personal information and talking to a salesperson” (NerdWallet). Facts below were verified October 30, 2026; PODS prices by address and season, so treat every figure as a reference point rather than a quote.

Plans and pricing (as of October 30, 2026)

PODS does not publish a rate card, so the best cross-company number is HireAHelper’s customer-reported average. For a large one-bedroom or typical two-bedroom apartment moved about 1,200 miles, PODS customers reported paying $2,591 on average; a three-bedroom apartment or two-bedroom house averaged $2,722, and local moves under 50 miles averaged $582 (HireAHelper). This Old House averaged five quotes for a two-bedroom move of 500 to 800 miles and got $2,721 (This Old House).

Real quotes spread wider than averages. moveBuddha readers reported a 16-foot container from Arizona to Washington for two bedrooms at $3,252 with “no hidden fees, no last-minute charges,” a three-bedroom apartment from Minnesota to Washington at $2,836, and an 8-foot container from California to Virginia at $4,209 plus $331 for separately booked unloading help (moveBuddha). ConsumerAffairs’ Dallas-to-Denver estimate for one 16-foot container was $4,213 (ConsumerAffairs). For storage only, moveBuddha puts the monthly container rate at $150 to $359 plus delivery and pickup.

There is no deposit. HireAHelper’s cancellation explainer says the card on file is usually processed about seven days before delivery, and long-distance transport is charged seven days before shipping (HireAHelper).

Containers, loading time and storage

PODS’ own size guide lists three containers: 8 x 7 x 8 feet for up to about 500 square feet of home, 12 x 8 x 8 feet for 500 to 800 square feet, and 16 x 8 x 8 feet for about 1,200 square feet. The 12-foot box is for local moves and storage only, typically under 50 miles (PODS). The FAQ gives maximum weights of 5,200 pounds for the 8-foot, 4,700 for the 12-foot and 4,200 for the 16-foot container, and advises keeping your heaviest loads to 75 percent of the limit (PODS FAQ). That inverted relationship, where the biggest box carries the least weight, is worth knowing if you own a piano or a workshop.

There is no loading deadline. The container rents month to month, so a weekend or a month of loading costs the same until the next billing cycle. Storage is at your home or at a PODS Storage Center; the FAQ says you can access a stored container “as often as needed with no additional charges,” with visits scheduled 24 to 48 hours ahead. Storage-center buildings are indoor but climate control is not guaranteed.

Fees and fine print

  • Cancellation: Free until 4 p.m. local time three days before the first delivery. After that, PODS charges $150 to the card on file, and cancellations are accepted only by phone or live chat, not email (HireAHelper; moveBuddha). Date changes follow the same cutoff. PODS’ own cancellation page did not render for us, so these terms come from secondary sources.
  • Other charges: Delivery, pickup and redelivery are billed separately; extended-service-zone fees apply outside standard areas; an attempted-service fee of up to $150 applies if a delivery or pickup is blocked; environmental or regulatory fees and cleaning fees may appear (moveBuddha; HireAHelper).
  • Storage billing: Monthly and not prorated. If you cancel after delivery, you forfeit the delivery fee, the first month’s rent and any contents protection.
  • Discounts: Military discounts up to 10 percent per moveBuddha; Move.org lists a promo code worth 30 percent off local delivery, redelivery and the first month’s rent for new orders (Move.org).

Protection: what is included and what it costs

Included coverage is the federal minimum of $0.60 per pound per item, according to moveBuddha; PODS’ own contents-protection page does not state the included amount. The Contents Protection Option is priced on the PODS FAQ: $38.95 a month for $5,000 of declared value, rising to $516.95 a month for the maximum $300,000, with a $100 deductible per claim at every level (PODS FAQ; PODS). Claims pay depreciated value, not replacement cost, and damage from improper packing, normal shifting or intentional acts is excluded. The option must be added before the first empty container arrives; the FAQ states coverage “can only be added or increased prior to the initial delivery.” moveBuddha notes that some markets include $10,000 of coverage in the quote, so ask.

Coverage area

Sources disagree by two states. moveBuddha lists 44 states plus D.C., excluding Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming; Move.org lists 46 states, excluding only Alaska, Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming (Move.org). PODS serves Hawaii and parts of Canada. We use the lower figure in the comparison table and flag the conflict.

Reputation and complaints

PODS has by far the largest review base in the category. Its claimed Trustpilot profile shows a 4.1 TrustScore from 13,761 reviews, with 68 percent five-star and 15 percent one-star, and 3,825 reviews in the last 12 months (Trustpilot). HireAHelper customers rate it 4.5 from 8,889 reviews, and ConsumerAffairs shows 4.5 from 5,876. The BBB shows an A+ on the Atlanta PODS profile and the accredited seal on the Clearwater, Florida headquarters profile, which also records 1,802 complaints in the last three years and 376 closed in the last 12 months (BBB).

The recurring complaint themes in moveBuddha’s reader reports are scheduling, communication and delays, including one reader whose container took 40 days to arrive and who concluded, “I paid too much for the level of service I got.” The recurring praise is that the final bill matched the quote.

How it compares

Against U-Pack, PODS wins on time and storage and loses on simplicity: U-Pack charges nothing until pickup, cancels free more than seven days out and posts a 4.9 Trustpilot score, but gives you only three business days at each end and no access to stored cubes. Against 1-800-PACK-RAT, PODS has more states and storage centers, while PACK-RAT includes $10,000 of contents coverage on long-distance moves and heavier 6,000-pound weight limits. Against U-Haul U-Box, PODS offers larger steel containers and included released-value coverage; U-Box offers no-fee cancellation and 50-state reach but insures nothing by default. Our ranking page scores all six on the same criteria.

Who should pick it

  • Households with a gap between move-out and move-in: the included first month, storage centers and open-ended loading fit staged moves.
  • Local movers who want one company for the move and storage; the 12-foot container exists for exactly that.
  • Anyone who wants to buy meaningful contents coverage with published prices.
  • Not the pick if you want a firm online quote, live in one of the excluded states, or might cancel inside the three-day window.
