U-Haul U-Box Review (2026): Cheap and Flexible, but Bring Your Own Insurance

Verdict: U-Box is the lowest-commitment container on the market: no cancellation fee, refunds for unused boxes, unlimited loading time and a guaranteed arrival date, from a network that reaches all 50 states. The hesitation is that nothing is insured unless you pay for it, the boxes are small and plywood, and service depends on the local branch.

Updated October 30, 2026 · Facts verified October 30, 2026
What we like
  • Good fit: Small moves of one to three rooms where a 2,000-pound box is enough
  • Good fit: People who may need to change dates or cancel, since U-Haul charges nothing to do so
Watch out for
  • Not for: Anyone who assumes their belongings are covered by default
  • Not for: Large homes, where five or six boxes add up and arrive on a 7-to-14-day schedule

The short version

U-Box is U-Haul’s portable container: a box of roughly 5 by 8 by 7.5 feet with 257 cubic feet of space and a 2,000-pound limit, delivered to your driveway, picked up, shipped and stored through the largest moving-equipment network in the country (U-Haul FAQ). U-Haul’s FAQ is unusually direct about the terms, which is both the product’s strength and its warning label. On the plus side: “There is no fee to cancel your reservation,” “any unused containers will be refunded,” you “can take as much time as you need to load and unload,” and a missed arrival date earns a $50 refund per day up to the full shipping cost. On the minus side, in the FAQ’s own words, “By default, your belongings are not insured while in transit or in storage.”

Facts below were verified October 30, 2026 against U-Haul’s FAQ and dated third-party sources. U-Haul quotes instantly online, so you can check your own route in minutes.

Plans and pricing (as of October 30, 2026)

U-Haul’s quote “includes container rental, delivery, pickup, shipping, transit, and storage fees,” with Moving Help labor, packing supplies and coverage as add-ons (U-Haul FAQ). Because you pay per container and unused boxes are refunded, you can reserve one more than you think you need.

For a typical two-bedroom apartment moved about 1,200 miles, HireAHelper’s customer-reported average was $2,500.11; a three-bedroom apartment or two-bedroom house averaged $2,627.16, and a local move under 50 miles averaged $561.87 (HireAHelper). Move.org ran U-Haul’s own estimator from Provo, Utah, two weeks out in September 2026 and got $1,949.95 for one container at 1,000 miles, $2,497.90 for two and $3,671.85 for three; the monthly container rental runs $80 to $200, similar to a self-storage unit (Move.org). This Old House’s average of five quotes for a two-bedroom 500-to-800-mile move was $1,778, the lowest of the companies it tested (This Old House).

One competitor-published data point for scale: U-Pack’s comparison article priced four U-Boxes from Seattle to Nashville for a three-bedroom home in July 2026 at $6,664 including delivery, transport and shipping insurance, and cited $380 per U-Box per month for additional storage (U-Pack). Treat that as marketing from a rival, but the per-box arithmetic is the point: a large home needs several containers.

The container, loading time and storage

One size only. The FAQ gives approximately 5 x 8 x 7.5 feet, up to 257 cubic feet and up to 2,000 pounds; HireAHelper measured the exterior at 7’11” x 4’8” x 6’11.5”. Boxes are plywood with a tarp cover, or a newer steel-framed composite model, and This Old House describes them as weather-resistant rather than weatherproof. Twenty-four furniture pads come free; you pay for missing or dirty ones (HireAHelper).

Loading time is open-ended and the first month of use and storage is included in the quote per HireAHelper. Containers can stay at your home or at a U-Haul facility “for as long as you need,” indoors and insulated at facilities, and the FAQ states “there is no fee to access your containers while in storage.” Monthly rent after the first month is not published on the FAQ; Move.org’s $80-to-$200 range is the best available figure. Domestic delivery typically takes 7 to 14 business days, and U-Haul can ship U-Boxes to “almost any destination worldwide,” with customs paperwork for U.S.-Canada moves.

Fees and fine print

  • Cancellation: None. “There is no fee to cancel your reservation.” NerdWallet adds that no deposit is required when paying by credit card (NerdWallet).
  • Arrival guarantee: Quoted shipping arrival dates are guaranteed; if U-Haul is late you get $50 per day back, up to the total shipping cost, regardless of how many containers ship.
  • Other charges: Delivery and pickup fees, separate fees for split deliveries, environmental charges, pad charges, a trailer rental fee if you tow the box yourself, and optional locks (HireAHelper).
  • Self-tow: U-Haul will let you tow a U-Box on its own trailer, which no rival offers.

Protection: the part to read twice

Nothing is included. SafeStor covers belongings stored at a U-Haul facility for $8.95 to $40.95 per container per month; SafeHaul covers them in transit for a one-time $49.95 to $149.95 per container; both come in $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000 levels (U-Haul FAQ). HireAHelper reports customers commonly paying $48 to $160 a month for optional insurance. For comparison, 1-800-PACK-RAT and SMARTBOX include $10,000 on long-distance moves and U-Pack includes catastrophic coverage up to $7,500 per ReloCube at no charge. If you ship three U-Boxes 1,000 miles and want $10,000 of transit coverage on each, budget a few hundred dollars that competitors’ quotes already contain.

Coverage area

All 50 states, with Move.org counting more than 1,500 U-Haul locations that support U-Box customers, plus Canada and international shipping (Move.org). That reach is the clearest advantage over PODS (44 to 46 states), 1-800-PACK-RAT and Zippy Shell (38) and SMARTBOX (23).

Reputation and complaints

Here U-Box lags. HireAHelper customers rate it 3.6 from 122 reviews, the lowest HireAHelper score among the six container companies we track (HireAHelper). Move.org gives it 3.6 and cites an average customer review score of 2.3 out of 5, down from 2.8. Trustpilot’s unclaimed uhaul.com profile shows 1.4 from 1,807 reviews with 89 percent one-star, but that profile covers truck rentals and every other U-Haul service, so we excluded it from the U-Box satisfaction blend rather than penalize the container product for the company’s rental counters (Trustpilot). The BBB lists U-Haul International as not accredited with 80 years in business; the letter grade was not shown on the page we reviewed (BBB). NerdWallet nonetheless made U-Haul its top container pick at 5.0 out of 5, crediting instant binding online quotes, day-certain delivery and relatively low Department of Transportation complaints.

The pattern in reviews is branch variance: one reviewer in This Old House’s roundup reported a reservation canceled internally without notice, and HireAHelper advises getting a written, itemized quote before booking. There is no real-time shipment tracking.

How it compares

U-Box beats everyone on commitment terms and reach, matches PODS and PACK-RAT on open-ended loading, and loses on container size, construction, included coverage and review scores. If you would otherwise rent a truck, U-Box removes the driving. If you are choosing between U-Box and U-Pack for a long-distance move, U-Pack’s steel ReloCube holds 308 cubic feet and 2,500 pounds, includes catastrophic coverage and tracking, and arrives in four to six business days, but gives you three days at each end and charges $50 to $150 to cancel inside a week. Our ranking page scores all six companies on the same published criteria.

Who should pick it

  • One- to three-room moves where one or two boxes will do and the budget matters more than the box.
  • Moves with uncertain dates: no cancellation fee, unused boxes refunded, open-ended loading.
  • Destinations the others do not serve, including Alaska, rural areas and international.
  • Not the pick for heavy or valuable loads unless you add SafeHaul, or for anyone who needs a fast, tracked delivery.
