Optimum Internet Review (2026): Low Promo Prices, Steep Standard Rates and Extra Fees

Verdict: Optimum's promotional prices are among the lowest in our comparison, but a $6 monthly network fee, $14 equipment rental, $100 install and a large documented gap between promo and standard rates make the real cost much harder to pin down.

Updated October 30, 2026 · Facts verified October 30, 2026
What we like
  • Good fit: Shoppers in Optimum fiber markets who want multi-gig speeds at a promo price
  • Good fit: Students who can stack the .edu discount
Watch out for
  • Not for: Anyone who wants a simple all-in monthly price without add-on fees

The short version

Optimum, the Altice USA brand, sells over cable and fiber networks. Promo pricing looks aggressive: 300 Mbps for $35 per month and 8 Gig fiber for $90, backed by five-year price guarantees per HighSpeedInternet.com. The official rate card lists standard rates of $75 for fiber 300 Mbps and $300 for 8 Gig, plus a $6 monthly Network Enhancement Fee and $14 per month for the gateway.

Optimum’s non-fiber service scored 64 in the 2026 ACSI study, the lowest non-fiber score in our comparison; Optimum Fiber scored 74. Prices verified October 30, 2026; providers change promotions frequently — confirm at checkout.

Plans and pricing (as of October 30, 2026)

Promo prices come from HSI’s Optimum page (updated October 1, 2026) and include a $10 Auto Pay and Paperless discount; standard rates come from Optimum’s official rate card effective May 18, 2026.

  • Entry tier: 300 Mbps — 300 Mbps download; upload is 300 Mbps in fiber markets or 20 Mbps in cable “1 Gig markets,” per the rate card. $35 per month promo with a five-year guarantee cited by HSI; standard rates are $75 (fiber markets) and $104.99 (cable markets).
  • Middle tiers (promo): 500 Mbps for $45, 1 Gig for $55, 2 Gig for $65. Standard rates: fiber 1 Gig $115, cable 1 Gig $144.99.
  • Top tier: 8 Gig Fiber — 8,000 Mbps download / 8,000 Mbps upload, $90 per month promo; standard rate $300 per month.

HSI also advertises a “Fiber internet for $30/mo” deal, and its FAQ says plans start at $30 while its table shows $35, so the floor is unclear. The $75 standard rate is the clearest indicator of post-promo pricing.

Fees and fine print

  • Contract: None, per HSI.
  • Early termination fee: Not listed on the official rate card; we could not verify one.
  • Equipment: Not included. The rate card lists a Wireless Gateway or DOCSIS modem at $14 per month; HSI says rental applies unless you opt out. Whole Home WiFi is $10 per month standard, $5 after a promo per HSI.
  • Installation: $100 professional installation, plus $25 for the first outlet on a new install, per the rate card.
  • Data cap: None, per HSI. The rate card does not list one.
  • Other fees: A $6 per month Network Enhancement Fee for internet customers, a $10 late fee, a $2 paper bill fee and a $5 payment assistance fee, all on the official rate card.
  • AutoPay and paperless: The promo prices assume the $10 Auto Pay and Paperless discount.

Speed and reliability

Optimum sells over two networks. Fiber markets get symmetrical speeds, up to 8 Gig both ways; cable markets pair 300 Mbps download with 20 Mbps upload, a typical cable asymmetry. Which network serves your address decides upload speed and the standard rate, so confirm it first.

In the 2026 ACSI study, Optimum’s non-fiber service scored 64, up from 63, and Optimum Fiber 74, up from 71. Optimum was not mentioned in the J.D. Power 2026 press release excerpts reviewed, so we could not verify a result there.

Where it’s available

We could not verify Optimum’s footprint. The CNET analysis syndicated on AOL lists Optimum twice with conflicting figures, 9 states at 9% and 21 states at 7%, and the sources reviewed name no markets. Treat availability as an address check.

Perks right now

Observed on HSI’s Optimum page on October 30, 2026:

  • A five-year price guarantee on promo pricing.
  • A “Fiber internet for $30/mo” deal.
  • $5 per month off internet with a .edu email address.
  • Free Whole Home WiFi for a limited time on some promotions; a free Optimum Stream device with some packages.
  • Gift cards on some plans (terms apply); a free iPhone 17e with trade-in on Unlimited Max mobile.

What to watch out for

  • The $6 per month Network Enhancement Fee for internet customers sits outside the advertised price.
  • The $14 gateway or modem fee, $100 professional install, $10 late fee, $2 paper bill fee and $5 payment assistance fee add up.
  • The promo-to-standard gap is large: fiber 300 Mbps is $35 on promo versus $75 standard, and cable 1 Gig standard is $144.99.
  • The lowest 2026 ACSI non-fiber score in our comparison; HSI cites confusing bundle discounts and equipment fees.

Who should choose Optimum

  • Households in Optimum fiber markets who want 2 Gig to 8 Gig speeds at promo rates and can opt out of the gateway rental.
  • Students who can use the .edu discount on top of a promo.
  • Shoppers who confirm in writing which fees apply before ordering.
  • Not the pick for anyone who wants an all-in price; see the live comparison table on this page for providers with included equipment.
