The short version
Kinetic is Windstream’s consumer brand, selling fiber and DSL in 18 states with about 3% nationwide coverage. The headline is a $19.99 per month fiber plan, the lowest fiber starting price in our comparison, with no contract and unlimited data. The 2 Gig tier tops out at $79.99.
The trade-offs are real. A $10.99 per month Wi-Fi gateway fee applies on some plans, an activation or installation fee applies but is not quantified, and HighSpeedInternet.com warns of “big price increases after as little as three months.” Kinetic Fiber scored 71 in the 2026 ACSI study, down one point from 2025. Prices verified October 30, 2026; providers change promotions frequently — confirm at checkout.
Plans and pricing (as of October 30, 2026)
Prices come from HSI’s Windstream page (modified September 16, 2026) and include a $5 per month AutoPay discount. HSI’s page is internally inconsistent: its plan cards list 300 Mbps at $19.99, while its table lists 100 Mbps at $19.99 and 300 Mbps at $34.99. We use the table figures below.
- Entry tier: Kinetic Internet 100 Mbps (Fiber) — 100 Mbps download, upload not stated, $19.99 per month for 12 months. The post-promo price is not stated, so we could not verify it.
- Middle tiers: 300 Mbps for $34.99 and 1 Gig for $39.99.
- Top tier: Kinetic Internet Max 2 Gig — 2,000 Mbps download, upload not stated, $79.99 per month on a 36-month promo. A standard 2 Gig plan is $59.99 per month, also on a 36-month promo.
- DSL: 50 Mbps for $44.99 per month.
Note the inversion: the 1 Gig fiber plan at $39.99 is cheaper than the 50 Mbps DSL plan at $44.99. If both are offered at your address, fiber is the obvious choice.
Fees and fine print
- Contract: None, per HSI.
- Early termination fee: None stated; we could not verify.
- Equipment: A $10.99 per month Kinetic WiFi Gateway fee applies on some plans. You can use your own compatible equipment.
- Installation: An activation or installation fee applies, but HSI lists it as a con without stating the amount, so we could not verify the cost.
- Data cap: None. Data is unlimited.
- AutoPay and paperless: The $5 per month AutoPay discount is built into the advertised prices.
Speed and reliability
Kinetic sells fiber where it has built it and DSL elsewhere. Fiber connections generally deliver symmetrical speeds, but the sources we reviewed do not state Kinetic’s upload figures, so we could not verify them. DSL over copper is far slower and is the fallback at addresses the fiber build has not reached.
In the 2026 ACSI study, Kinetic Fiber by Windstream scored 71, down from 72. That is the lowest fiber score in our comparison this year, in line with the non-fiber scores posted by Xfinity and Spectrum (both 71). Kinetic was not mentioned in the J.D. Power 2026 press release excerpts we reviewed, so we could not verify a J.D. Power result.
Where it’s available
A CNET analysis syndicated on AOL lists Windstream in 18 states with about 3% nationwide coverage, one of the smaller footprints in our comparison. Kinetic also sells DSL, so fiber is not at every address in that footprint; check your address for fiber specifically.
Perks right now
Observed on HSI’s Windstream page on October 30, 2026:
- A gift card worth up to $300 when switching back to Kinetic Fiber.
- Three months free on a new plan of at least 300 Mbps.
- A $20 monthly discount when you connect a new or existing AT&T Wireless plan.
What to watch out for
- Monthly equipment fees and activation fees that are not reflected in the advertised price.
- Low promo prices that expire quickly, with large increases afterward.
- Weak HSI customer sub-scores: Service 1.5, Pricing 1.5 and Speed 1.5 out of 5.
Who should choose Kinetic by Windstream
- Households in Kinetic fiber areas that want the lowest possible first-year bill and will set a reminder for the promo end date.
- AT&T Wireless customers who can stack the $20 monthly discount.
- Shoppers who can supply their own compatible gateway and skip the $10.99 fee.
- Not the pick for anyone who wants predictable pricing beyond year one; see the live comparison table on this page for providers with multi-year guarantees.
